I'm Lelo Mashatile, founder of Money Therapy. On paper, I was doing everything right — but behind the scenes, I was still living paycheck to paycheck, still overwhelmed and anxious about money. Even with my Bachelor of Economic Science (Honours) from Wits and Actuarial Board Exams from the IFoA, I still wasn't getting money right.
Just like so many of you, I had to build my financial literacy — but more than that, I had to heal my relationship with money so I could truly thrive. This work is personal for me. I built Money Therapy for people who are where I used to be, because you don't have to do money alone.
Get in touchI grew up in Alexandra. Like so many first-generation success stories, my path was meant to look a certain way: study hard, get the degree, get the job, make the family proud. I studied Economics, then pushed further into Actuarial Science — one of the most demanding, numbers-driven paths there is. I did the corporate career. On paper, I had "made it."
What nobody tells you about "making it" is what happens afterward. Nobody teaches you that there's a difference between looking successful and actually being — and feeling — successful. I found that out the hard way: earning decently, but still living paycheck to paycheck, with debt quietly piling up. Underneath the optics of looking successful was a silent story of survivor's guilt, people-pleasing, financial trauma, and a scarcity thinking that didn't disappear just because I was now educated, with a fancy job title.
That gap — between how my life looked and how I actually felt about money — sent me on my own money therapy journey, even though I didn't have a name for it then. I worked on my financial skills and my emotional and mental health at the same time. And I realised something: my money got better the moment I got better emotionally and mentally. Education matters, but it doesn't automatically translate into financial success — all it does is give you access and increase your earning capacity. I had to build the practical skills and heal what was underneath them, and that's what made the real difference.
I'm an entrepreneur with a few different business interests today, but Money Therapy is where my actual story and my actual training meet. I built it for people who are exactly where I used to be — so they know, the moment they meet me, that I understand, and that they don't have to do this alone.
"Lelo's insight goes so much deeper than just understanding finance and debt management. She takes you on a journey of understanding why you make the financial decisions you make, exposing the emotions and learned behaviours that stand in the way of financial freedom."
Jean-Michel Lefebure, Lead Pastor — Collective Church
"The work that Lelo does helped me recognise long-standing patterns in my financial behaviour, and I learnt practical strategies for managing debt more intentionally. That combination of awareness and tools gave me the confidence to take meaningful steps forward with my finances."
Diana Dembe, Financial Transformation Bootcamp 2022
"By the end of the course I understood how I relate to money and what behaviours needed to change. I learned that money isn't the problem — my relationship with it is. I'd recommend it to everyone, whether you earn R1,000 or R10 million a month."
Refuwe, Debt Detox Course, Collective Church 2024
"Thank you so much for choosing to walk the journey of accountability with me. This has lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders already. I used to dread month end, but now I am looking forward to it."
Ketsho, The Goal Room, 2026
